ADVANCING and PROTECTING DEMOCRACY THROUGH ACTION and PARTICIPATION

For release: Thursday - September 4, 2025

SOME THINGS TO DO DURING SEPTEMBER TO KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

By any measure, 2025 has been one of the most unsettling and uncertain years any of us has had to endure in recent memory, if not in our lifetime. From the chaotic, destructive and downright cruel way Donald Trump has conducted himself in the White House since he was swept back into power — filled with rage, retribution and revenge — we have been subjected to some of the most frightening and uncertain days, weeks and months in American history. Many millions of people have been hurt, ruined, terrorized and deported. The misery Trump has caused and is still causing is incalculable. It will take many years and herculean effort to repair the damage that has been wrought on our nation and the world by Trump and his subservient allies in Wisconsin and all over the country.

We have so much we need to do to stem the tide and reverse course. While the job ahead of us is daunting, it is not insurmountable.

Here in Wisconsin, so many of you have fought back against this unprecedented assault on our freedom and sense of decency. Beginning this past Winter, when we stood up against the power and treasure of the richest person in the world — the tyrant and bully Elon Musk — who swept into our state to buy, with more than $30 million, a pivotal seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court in order to benefit himself personally and to swing our court far to the right in support of the MAGA agenda and to bend to Trump's will. Musk's millions and his candidate were swamped by the votes of the people — more than ten percentage points — and the Tesla billionaire was "driven" out of Wisconsin by us and then out of Washington DC as well.

Earlier this Summer, when Trump's allies in the Wisconsin Legislature passed hyper partisan legislation to impose a modern-day poll tax on some Wisconsin voters who have long had the right to vote restored after serving their time and paying back their debt to society for a felony conviction – more than 800 of you rose up and joined CCWI in urging Gov. Tony Evers to veto that misguided legislation which Evers did, and we dodged yet another attempt to make voting more difficult in Wisconsin.

What this demonstrates is that the best way to defend against these sustained assaults on our democracy and decency is to fight back and take action! By getting involved and actively participating in our civic life, Wisconsinites can and have made a big difference. And, because we are the most closely contested, most evenly divided "swing" state in the nation — and will continue to be so during the upcoming 2026 mid-term election and the 2028 presidential election — the result is that when Wisconsinites get involved and participate, it makes a huge difference. We can affect the outcome of how so many things end up in the Badger state and therefore in the nation.

Your active participation in our politics and vote at the ballot box can literally mean the difference between victory and defeat!

So here are a few things that you can consider getting actively involved in during this month of September to make a difference in your community, your state and in the nation:

Fair Maps Community Hearings - ONLINE WEBINAR

Join Common Cause Wisconsin (CCWI) and Fair Maps Coalition (FMC) partners for a virtual town hall on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, beginning at 6:00 PM. The event is free, but you must register to attend the online webinar.

While Wisconsin currently has fair state legislative district voting maps, these are only in place until the 2030 Census when the U.S. and Wisconsin constitutions both require the voting district maps be redrawn. To prevent gerrymandering by either party and to prevent legislators from carving out districts that help them retain their seat, the people of Wisconsin need to advocate for LEGISLATION to ensure FAIR VOTING MAPS for FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Join CCWI Chair Penny Bernard Schaber and other expert activists and learn about the process and the advocacy for achieving sustainable fair state legislative and congressional district voting maps! Bring your questions, comments, and your friends. Learn more and register today!

Disability Voting Rights Celebration Week - ONLINE WEBINAR

Join the Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition in this national effort to make sure disabled voters are registered, ready to vote, know their rights, and have access to the ballot by joining the ‘Know Your Voting Rights’ Webinar on Tuesday, September 9, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. The excellent panel will discuss voting rights from different perspectives, including a clerk, a poll worker, a voter with a disability, and an expert on guardianship. Learn more and register for the online webinar here.

Wisconsin Voting Equipment Review Panel and Public Voting Equipment Demonstration - ONLINE or IN PERSON

The Wisconsin Elections Commission will hold meetings on September 11th about the voting equipment used in Wisconsin’s elections. See for yourself how the machines operate and learn about how they aid in our elections. The Public Demonstration of Voting Equipment is an opportunity for members of the public to observe how the system operates. Members of the public may attend virtually or in-person. Learn more and join the meeting!

People’s Promise Campaign - ONLINE ACTION

The Trump Administration’s attacks on Medicare, Social Security, and civil rights won’t stop unless we stop them. The current U.S. budget debt ceiling fight is our chance to demand measures to establish a livable economy, a government for the people, and equal protection for all. Every call we make, every event we attend, and every story we tell helps to build the pressure we need to force change and prevail in this struggle.

The People’s Promise Campaign is our vision - not just for what democracy should be, but how we can build it together, and sooner rather than later.

We’re calling on our elected leaders to honor the power entrusted to them by the people - and to help deliver an America with:

  • An economy that works for everyone. Where workers earn a livable wage, can unionize, and can afford essentials like healthcare, housing, and childcare.
  • A government that serves the people. Where the wealthiest pay their fair share, public schools are fully funded, and no one falls through the cracks.
  • Equal rights and opportunity for all. Where votes are protected, voices are heard, and no one’s freedom can be denied without due process.

You can take action in support of The People’s Promise by going to the People’s Promise webpage. Here you can find easy to use tools to write letters to your local newspapers and representatives, as well as other actions and information.

The People’s Promise is a long-term commitment to build a better democracy from the ground up - powered by people like you.

That's all for now -- four specific actions in September you can participate in. Choose one or get involved in more than one! I guarantee you that you will feel better for having done so. Because the very best antidote for despair is to take action to create hope and with hope can come change. It may sound like a cliche, but it is also very true. And it works as we have demonstrated right here in Wisconsin during this year. Let's keep it going.

Forward!

You're invited! Virtual Community Event for Fair Maps

For release: Thursday - August 21, 2025

Why Wisconsin needs an Independent Redistricting Commission to ensure Fair Voting Maps

Join Common Cause Wisconsin (CCWI) and Fair Maps Coalition (FMC) partners for a virtual town hall on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 beginning at 6:00 PM. The event is free, but you must register to attend the online webinar.

REGISTER FOR The VIRTUAL TOWNHALL

While Wisconsin currently has fair maps, these are only in place until the 2030 Census. We need LEGISLATION to ensure FAIR VOTING MAPS for FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Fair maps leaders from across the state have been working on a draft proposal for an Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC). Right now, leaders and advocates are organizing community hearings to educate and involve Wisconsinites about what an IRC is and why a legislative fix is needed to end gerrymandering. Why does this matter? Lawmakers don’t have to listen to their constituents when they can draw themselves into power through gerrymandering. Help ensure Wisconsin isn’t gerrymandered again. This excellent article in the Wisconsin Examiner last month provides a good description of the proposed IRC and the grass roots effort and work of the FMC to bring lasting change to Wisconsin's redistricting process.

The September 9th virtual community hearing will include a presentation about the IRC model for Wisconsin by current CCWI Board Chair and Fair Maps Coalition district leader, Penny Bernard Schaber and longtime state fair maps leader and activist, Carlene Bechen. Both Penny and Carlene are Common Cause members and serve on the League of Women Voters ad hoc committee which crafted the working draft of the IRC proposal. (You can read the proposal here: https://bit.ly/FMCDraftProposal). Penny and Carlene will be joined by iuscely flores and Nicole Gabrail, organizers from the FMC team who have been “on the road” this summer taking this presentation across the state for in person community events.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about why an independent redistricting commission should determine and decide what Wisconsin's state legislative and congressional district voting maps should look like instead of partisan politicians drawing maps for their own benefit. Join us for the virtual hearing on September 9th. Register today and bring your comments, questions, and friends.

Onward!

Actions You Can Take NOW to Defend Democracy and Advance Reform

For release: Wednesday - July 9, 2025

Image: Holding Power Accountable

The 4th of July has just passed and Trump’s big, awful bill to destroy the American economy, cut taxes for the wealthiest segment of our society, pour billions into terrorizing all Americans through further weaponizing domestic raids, interrogations, incarceration and deportation of tens of thousands of people all over the nation for any variety of reasons and to cut health care for millions of Americans -- was just signed into law on Friday after passing both houses of Congress last week by the narrowest of margins.

We have two courses of action to take. We can simply despair and do nothing which is what Trump and his allies are counting on most Americans to do. Or, we can rise up, fight back, organize and mobilize through action and engagement. American politics is very much a contact sport now and to have any chance of prevailing, we need to take action.

Here are some specific actions you can take now that can make a real difference in preserving our democracy and in advancing reforms we have long sought and need. During these “dog days” of Summer, you can join others in making you voice heard and in fighting back against the assault on our state and country by:

Tell Governor Evers to Veto the “Poll Tax” Bill - ONLINE ACTION

Last month, the Wisconsin Legislature, along party lines, passed Senate Bill 95 / Assembly Bill 87 that would prevent people with felony convictions from regaining their constitutional right to vote until they have paid all “fines, costs, fees, surcharges and restitution” imposed as part of their sentence.

This amounts to nothing more than a modern-day poll tax on many voters in Wisconsin – which American courts and lawmakers of both political parties have long opposed and fought against. The goal of this misguided and partisan legislation is to make it more difficult for long marginalized and over-policed communities in Wisconsin who are disproportionately Black, Indigenous and other people of color, as well as people living in poverty and those with disabilities to be able to exercise their right to cast a vote.

The people pushing this bill want us to believe it’s about protecting crime victims. But using people who have been subject to crime as political cover for voter suppression is dishonest and deeply disrespectful.

You can use this letter writing form here to let Gov. Evers know you oppose this measure and encourage him to use his veto power to prevent this bill from becoming law. Hundreds of Wisconsinites have already contacted the Governor so please add your name and have your voice heard so that Gov. Evers knows how outrageous this voter suppression measure really is.

Fair Maps Community Hearings - IN PERSON EVENTS

Join the Fair Maps Coalition for our community townhalls in many places throughout Wisconsin over the next several weeks. While Wisconsin currently has fair maps, these are only in place until the 2030 Census when the U.S. and Wisconsin constitutions both require the voting district maps be redrawn. To prevent gerrymandering by either party and to prevent legislators from carving out districts that help them retain their seat, the people of Wisconsin need to advocate for LEGISLATION to ensure FAIR VOTING MAPS for FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Make Good Trouble in Wisconsin - IN PERSON EVENT

Five years ago, our nation lost civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis of Georgia - but his legacy of making “Good Trouble” lives on. On July 17, Common Cause will join thousands of people across the country to honor his life by taking peaceful, nonviolent action to protect our democracy and confront attacks on our civil rights. And we know the power of coming together. Unity is our victory. Whether you’re outraged by attacks on our civil rights, the gutting of Medicaid and SNAP, or the erasure of our history in schools — this is your moment to stand up. Join us to honor John Lewis & defend democracy!

People’s Promise Campaign - ONLINE ACTION

The People’s Promise Campaign is our vision - not just for what democracy should be, but how we can build it together, and sooner than you might think.

We can and will survive this most recent attack on democracy in our state and in our nation. This past Spring, Wisconsin voters rose up and decisively turned back the all-out assault by the richest person in the world on our state supreme court, Elon Musk’s $30 million could not match the voices and votes of Wisconsinites who rejected his out-of-state money and attempted hijacking of control of our state’s highest court by an astonishing ten point margin – a landslide by Wisconsin standards.

When we organize, mobilize and fight back we win – just as we did in 2023-24 when our activism helped secure fair and competitive state legislative voting maps for the first time in 13 years.

We know how to do this. The key is to take action and do it. Please join us!

On Wisconsin. Forward!

Giving Thanks for the People of Wisconsin Who Fight For the Preservation of Democracy

For release: Tuesday - November 26, 2024

Image: Thanksgiving feast

I have had the privilege of directing Common Cause Wisconsin (CC/WI) since 1996 and have been fortunate to be able to endure through good times and bad over the years. Voting rights, fair state legislative and congressional voting maps, campaign finance reform, ethical state government, fair courts and holding those in power accountable to the people has been our constant and steady mission for decades and your support has kept us not only relevant, but also effective, outspoken and proactive.

It almost goes without saying that for about half of us, the results by and large of the November 5th election for the nation are very concerning and troubling. Donald Trump has consistently tried to undermine democracy both while he was President and during the last four years -- denying and denigrating the completely legitimate and fairly run 2020 election and then encouraging the insurrection and violence that occurred on January 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. He should have been disqualified from running for office this year but instead, he is now the President-elect. Common Cause Wisconsin will continue to stand up to any and every attempt by Trump, his incoming administration and his proxies in Wisconsin to subvert democracy and undermine the constitutional freedoms that have thus far survived since the inception of the nation in 1789 and of our state in 1848, through cataclysmic events such the Civil War, the Great Depression and now, the return of Trumpism.

But not is all doom and gloom in the nation or, particularly in Wisconsin. Thanks to the sustained and diligent work of a dedicated and increasingly large cadre of concerned people, like you, Wisconsin has fair voting maps for state legislative districts. Gov. Tony Evers, with our strong support, signed into law on February 19th new voting maps effective for the 2024 elections which essentially ended 13 years of one of the most unfair, partisan gerrymanders of state legislative maps in the nation. And on November 5th those new maps produced results that are much more in line with the truly competitive, evenly divided “purple” state that we really are. Election results with the new voting maps produced a gain of 4 Democratic seats in the State Senate, where Republicans now hold a much narrower 18 to 15 majority. In the State Assembly, Democrats gained 10 seats and the Republican majority has been reduced to 54 to 45. We worked non-stop for more than 13 years for fair voting maps and finally Wisconsin has them. Now we must fight to keep and improve them.

Voter participation turnout was high and robust around Wisconsin this year, although slightly below 2020’s record level. And the November 5th election was largely free from any problems or major “glitches.” Issues with unsecured absentee ballot tabulating machines in Milwaukee were discovered and remedied without incident and 30,000 ballots were re-tabulated with all sides in agreement about the procedure to address and fix the error.

CC/WI continued its vigilance against voter suppression and election denialism in 2024. In May we signed on to an amicus brief in a lawsuit to reverse a misguided 2022 conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court decision to ban secure ballot drop boxes which enabled voters to return absentee ballots in time to be counted and to have their voices heard. This benefits every voter in Wisconsin, and on July 5th the Court reversed the terrible 2022 decision and ballot drop boxes were restored for 2024 and beyond -- a significant victory for voting rights. In the final months before November 5th hundreds of volunteers were recruited to protect voters and voting at the polls.

And now we are turning our attention and efforts to the pivotal Wisconsin Supreme Court election this coming April which will determine its control and direction and the future of fair voting maps, voting rights and so much more. The eyes of the nation will yet again turn to Wisconsin for that titanic election contest and all of us must step up and engage to ensure that voters are informed and that their votes will be counted. Because so much is at stake.

All of this significant effort and good work is possible because of you. We will continue to stand up for each other and democracy in this state, with your support. Without you, we would not have a strong voice. With you we do. I am deeply grateful to you. Please do not despair. We will continue to work diligently for the survival of democracy and we will prevail. Thank you again. And Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

On Wisconsin and Forward!
